Football Boot Spotting – London 2012 Olympics 26th July 2012
The London 2012 men’s football tournament began on Thursday with all the participating teams in action. Although the matches were played before the opening ceremony, they were still played to competitive international standard as the players aim to take home a gold medal.
Favourites Brazil started their campaign off with a 3-2 win over Egypt whilst Spain, who recently won Euro 2012, lost 1-0 to Japan. There were also wins for Uruguay and Belarus. The rest of the games, including Great Britain against Senegal, ended in draws.
Boot spotted from the matches were Papa Gueye of Senegal in a pair of Adidas adiPower Predator CL boots and Uruguayan Luis Suarez in Adidas f50 adiZeros’. Also spotted were Brazilians Sandro and Rômulo who wore Adidas Predator Incurzas’ and Adidas adiPures respectively.
Plays for: FC Metalist Kharkiv and Senegal
Not many football fans know much about Gueye who plays in the Ukrainian Premier League. The defender was part of a strong defensive Senegal team who limited the number of scoring opportunities Team GB had and got themselves a point from the game thanks to a late equaliser.
Plays for: Liverpool and Uruguay
The Liverpool striker was back at Old Trafford for the first time since the controversial handshake incident with Patrice Evra. He was a constant threat against the United Arab Emirates and helped his side to a 2-1 victory. His strike partnership with Edison Cavani is vital if Uruguay players want to finish with a medal.
Plays for: Tottenham Hotspurs and Brazil
A lot is expected of Sandro and the rest of the Brazil squad at the 2012 olympics with a number of world class players being selected. They started the first game with a number of exciting attacking players in the side however these players will not get to shine if Sandro does not do his job correctly in the centre of midfield.
Plays for: Spartak Moscow and Brazil
Normally a defensive midfielder, Rômulo was deployed in the back four against Egypt due to his defensive qualities and ability to initiate attacks from the back. Playing against a weaker side he was given the space to push up field and join in with the the constant Brazilian attacks.
