New Shirts on the International Scene

Taking a break from the domestic schedule, this week saw a number of international friendlies take centre stage following a winter break. With these the first games of the 2013 international season, players were looking to impress as the Road to Rio is now less than eighteen months away.

Whilst England were busy signing off their Umbro kit in style against 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil, our eyes wear firmly fixed on the latest kit releases gaining their competitive debuts across Europe. Portugal and Holland both released their new designs to mixed fortune but there is certainly no denying that their on-field presence is sure to prove popular amongst both players and fans.

Always one to court attention, Cristiano Ronaldo and his team-mates sported the new Portugal 2013 Away offering against Equador. Made by Nike, the strong black design has been inspired by the colour of the basalt volcanic stone used extensively across the country. Set against the black is a cross running over the chest and decorated in midnight fog whilst the Portugal badge livens up proceedings and adds a colourful presence stitched atop the left chest.

In complete contrast to the new kit was Ronaldo’s wearing of the striking new Nike Mercurial Vapor IX SG Pro football boots. Looking splendid in their fireberry colourway, these boots perfectly complement his elite performance and lightning speed across the pitch. Although Ronaldo himself added to his international goal tally, it wasn’t enough to inspire his team to victory as they fell to a surprise 2-3 home defeat.

Elsewhere on the international radar, two heavyweights of European football met as a youthful Dutch line-up gave a debut to their Holland 2013/14 Away Football Shirt, as they took on Italy.

Inspired by the Holland national flag, a fresh white offering to Nike’s latest design is joined by red and blue panels mirrored over the chest. With performance and comfort clearly at the forefront of this design, Nike have utilised their innovative Dri-FIT technology to pull sweat away and leave you feeling dry and comfortable as the action heats up.

The Dutch were all set to record victory against the four times World Champions until the Azzurri equalised during injury time to snatch a 1-1 result.
